COLLECTION #152: Houghton Mifflin Vintage Readers

Here is my collection of some of the 1957, 1962 Reading for Meaning series of school readers by Houghton Mifflin Company. These sweet little books have charming illustrators, some of which are done by favorite Corinne Malvern. I have two of the pre-primers, and 6 of the possible 9 readers.  I also have a second copy each of the pre-primers (not shown) with different artwork on the covers.

Adorable illustrations by Corinne Malvern in The Big Show

I read your post on the Houghton Mifflin RFM series and it reminded me of when I was in 2nd grade (March 1967) and my reading group was verbally reading through the story "Home With The Mumps" from the "On We Go" text. That afternoon (a Friay), upon reaching the front door of my home, I suddenly became warm and uncomfortable. By the evening, I had a mild fever and was having trouble swallowing. By Monday morning, my mother had me in the doctor's office. The doctor checked me out for about 5 minutes and decided that I had THE MUMPS! So needless to say I NEVER forgot about that story. Just earlier today, I received an EBAY parcel containing a mint 1957 copy of On We Go. Guess which story I will be reading tonight! Love your site btw and thanks for the inspiration. Carl M.
